TANAISTE Mary Coughlan is frantically backing Taoiseach Brian Cowen as the clock ticks down to his vote of confidence this evening.
The Fianna Fail South West TD has been calling TDs all day in a bid to garner support for her embattled leader as he tries to beat a leadership challenge by Minister Michael Martin.
The Tanaiste has been a loyal supporter of the Taoiseach after her somewhat surprising elevation to second in command after the last election.
Although a change in Government is expected in the forthcoming election, a change in Fianna Fail leadership would undoubtedly also see a change in the current Government front bench.
She has already secured the backing of the county’s only other Fianna Fail TD Niall Blaney who has publicly acknowledged his support for Mr Cowen.
It had been originally thought that the Taoiseach would easily survive the leadership heave but it is now believed it may be closer than first thought.
Some of the 71 TDs who had earlier expressed their support for Taoiseach Cowen may now have changed their support for their leader.
A number including Willie O’Dea and Billy Kelleher have said it is time for change and have admitted they will vote against the motion of confidence in the Taoiseach.
A source close to the Tanaiste said she believes Brian Cowen has all the qualities to lead Fianna Fail into the election and beyond.
“The Tanaiste is a strong believer in Brian Cowen’s leadership. You have to remember that the Tanaiste works with the Taoiseach on a daily basis and she has seen what he has gone through.
“She has stood by him and will do all she can to make sure he continues as leader,” said the source.
