Unsuccessful Donegal South West byelection candidate Barry O’Neill was not selected by Fine Gael to run in the General Election at a convention last night.
Mr O’Neill (37), an RTÉ sports reporter and producer, was defeated by sitting TD Dinny McGinley (65), following a party ruling at the convention in Glenties that it run only one candidate in the constituency where Tánaiste Mary Coughlan holds a Fianna Fáil seat and Pearse Doherty holds a seat for Sinn Fein.
