Speaking at the event Mayor Harvey said “This event will be known as “Rundonegal Women’s 5k” and all proceeds raised will go towards 2 Charities designated each year by the Mayor.
“I am launching this initiative this year and it is hoped that the incoming Mayor whoever he or she may be will continue to drive the event with the support of Donegal County Council and Athletics groups in the County.”
This year Mayor Harvey announced that the proceeds will go towards two charities – Diabetes Federation of Ireland, Donegal Branch and Strengthening Families Programme Donegal.
Currently The Donegal Branch of the Diabetes Federation is fundraising to contribute towards research in to the cure and treatment of type 1 Diabetes.
Huge advancements have been made in this area of medicine and the Diabetes Federation of Ireland have partnered with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to promote and help fund type 1 diabetes research in Ireland. For more information on this please go to www.diabetes.ie
The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a National and International family skills based intervention program that works directly with families in distress.
The program has shown to have a positive impact on family relationships, enhancing parenting skills and learning effective communication skills. We are fortunate that the program is available in Donegal. For more information on this please go to www.sfp.com.
