UPDATED: BRAVE DARREN 5TH IN EURO CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI-FINAL.
Darren McBrearty finished fifth in his European Indoor 800Metres run this afternoon in Paris.
The Letterkenny Athletic Club runner hit the front with just over a lap to go – and there was some barging between the athletes as the pace stepped up.
But brave Darren couldn’t hold off the challenge of more experienced athletes to finish in an excellent 1.49.78.
Andrew Osagie from Britain won the race. Just three from each semi-final qualified for the final.
But it was a fantastic performance by the 19-year-old and he is being tipped by Ireland team manager Patsy McGonagle as a real future prospect for Ireland.
Said Darren: “The coaches told me to go for it and that’s what I did. I probably took to the front a wee bit too early, but I am not disappointed. I thought I did well.”
