IT’S ALWAYS great when Donegal gets a plug – especially abroad where it can bring tourists to the county.
But one dreadful American website which markets itself to the Irish-American community managed to plug us AND insult us all in ONE paragraph.
IrishCentral.com normally carries old stories from the auld sod.
And one feature (to be fair to them) includes Donegal as one of the top ten places to see during a holiday in Ireland.
The paragraph reads: “You take the high road.. to the Donegal highlands, again impossibly remote and almost inaccessible, but well worth the effort. Towering mountains, wild seas, and gorgeous scenery, perhaps Ireland’s best-kept secret.”
Impossibly remote? Almost inaccessible?
“Only if you want to climb Mount Errigal in January perhaps,” said one tourist official.
“It’s great to get Donegal even mentioned in American media because they end up in Dublin and Kerry when they do come over.
“It’s a quite stupid thing to say. We have two airports serving the county from Carrickfin and Derry. Belfast International is 90 minutes away – and you can be here from Dublin in 40 minutes by air, which is faster than the link from Dublin to Kerry.
“It’s a bit of dumb thing to write.”
