GARDAI believe burglars may have struck at a farm near Raphoe because it was a stormy night and locals may not have heard them.
Thousands of euro worth of farm machinery including a quad was stolen from the premises of David Killen at Labadish during the early hours of yesterday morning.
Mr Killen, a well-known farmer, arrived at his farm to find a padlock hanging off the gates.
“I knew something was up straight away the way the chain was hanging and the gates were swinging. It was an awful feeling,” he said.
He believes the thieves knew exactly what they were looking for during the raid which took place between 2.30am and 7am.
“They took the more expensive stuff and left other stuff behind which would not have been worth as much. They knew what they wanted.
“There was a couple of pallets moved around the yard as well as some planks so we think they loaded the quad onto a truck of some kind,” he said.
Mr Killen said the thieves were careful not to disturb the two dogs in the yard and he believes they used the stormy night as a cover for the robbery.
“My mother and father live on the farm and they, and the dogs, heard nothing because the animals would have barked.
“I think they knew exactly what they were doing by carrying out the robbery on such a bad night,” he said.
