BONAGEE UNITED are local soccer’s Under 14 Champions League winners after a penalty shoot-out win over Gweedore United.
The sides finished 1-1 after extra time and it was left to Sean Hume, David Tyrell, Ryan Rainey and Michael Millar to score in the shoot-out and give Bonagee a 4-2 win on penalties.
In normal time Gweedore had taken the lead on 28 minutes with a superb goal by Cian Mulligan who round a number of defenders to score.
Gweedore should have been 2-0 up at half time, but as Ciaran McBride was about to surely score, Bonagee’s Jason Quinn slid in to prevent the shot.
Bonagee eventually drew level half way through the second half in controversial circumstances.
Referee Liam Farren ruled that Gweedore’s Niall Friel had his foot high on a challenge.
And from the resulting free kick Bonagee’s Ryan Rainey curled the ball around the wall and into the net, giving Carroll no chance.
Both sides had chances to win it in extra time – but both sides found opposing keepers in top form.
Bonagee’s keeper James Quinn was the hero of the shoot-out, saving from Gweedore’s David McCarry and John Coyle.
