UPDATED: GARDA detectives are questioning a man after an armed gang terrified staff at St Johnston post office before making off with cash.
This is the second post office raid in last than a week following last Wednesday’s raid on Manorcunningham post office.
IN that raid, two armed robbers stole a sum of money before dumping a car in the Creggan area of Derry.
This morning’s raid took place just after 9am and was carried out within seconds.
A lone raider, believed to be armed, entered the premises and threatened staff before escaping with a sum of money.
Garda set up checkpoints in Lifford and other border crossings and checked numerous cars in the area.
A man was later arrested near Bridgend and was taken to Letterkenny Garda Station for questioning.
Inspector David Kelly confirmed: “A male was located and arrested in the Bridgend area and he has been detained under the Offences Against the State Act.”
Gardai say their investigations are still ongoing.
“This was carried out in a very speedy manner. It would suggest the raider knew the workings of the post office and that there was cash there.
“We are appealing to anybody who may have been in the area and who may have witnessed anybody acting suspiciously to contact us,” he said.
