What a glorious day we had in Inishowen, blue skies little wind and the sun that shone all day long most un- alliance like weather but there were no complaints after all the wind and rain that we had endured over the last while,”Eat your heart out Noel Callan” the Captain of the Alliance missed out on the good weather as he is in Spain!
A huge field of 88 turned up to pit their skills against this magnificent Craddock/Ruddy creation named Glashedy. The day was just perfect for playing on a course well manicured and the greens playing very well. The rough though was penalising in the extreme and it was only those who managed to hit the ball straight who profited.
In the Gross section Connor Mallon ,a former assistant Professional at this club showed that he was well acquainted with it .On the first nine he had no less than 4 birdies and one bogey to be 3 under for the first nine .John Callan had 3 birdies and a dropped shot to be 1 behind Connor. Michael McGeady went out in 34 with 2 birdies and a dropped stroke. Enda Kennedy and Sean Quigg were on level par having both dropped a stroke but also had 1 birdie. It was the more difficult nine that sorted out the final places .Sean dropped 5 strokes and had one birdie on his back nine to fill 4th Gross. John Callan with 4 dropped shots and no birdies went in to 2nd Nett. This is the second week in a row that the Strabane native now playing out of Ball castle missed out on the main prize.
Meanwhile Enda Kennedy who had been in joint 4th place with Sean Quigg could not make up the deficit and indeed dropped three to par with one bogie to finish on 74.
Meanwhile as playing partners Connor Mallon and Michael McGeady battled away Michael dropped three shots and had a birdie made up sufficient ground on Connor to beat him on break of tie .Connor had been sailing on serenely only to suffer bogies on 11 and 14 interspersed with a birdie on 13 However he dropped shot on 16 and suffered an ugly double bogey on 17 which Michael birdied and it was this advantage that gave him victory.
In the Nett section Eddie Mc Hugh triumphed over the large field with a magnificent 68 nett and had a shot to spare over John Callan who had been thwarted in the gross section. Eddie had 10 of his handicap left after the first nine .He had double boogied the 9th but on the more difficult back nine he only used 6 of his handicap allowance and this included a further double bogey on the 16th .The secret to Eddies great round was his ability to hit the hit the ball straight.
In the golfer of the season in the nett section Odran McGettigan has a very healthy lead of 5 over John Callan .in the Gross Enda Kennedy leads Michael McGeady
