A LEADING Letterkenny businessman has hit out at the proposed GAA split of the town – revealing that it will also split his own twins.
Terry McEniff told donegaldaily.com today that the “crazy” decision of the County Committee to allow Letterkenny Gaels to have sole access to Aughaninshin part of the town would literally split his family down the middle.
His 11-year-old twins Peter and Meabh play gaelic football with St Eunan’s.
If the new rule comes in and St Eunan’s fail to win their appeal at the Ulster Hearings Council of the GAA, Meabh will be able to continue to play for St Eunan’s, but Peter will be forced to switch to Letterkenny Gaels.
Said Mr McEniff: “Meabh has played at U-14 level because in the girls game they are allowed to play at higher levels at a younger age.
“However Peter has only played at U-12s and would therefore be bound to play for the Gaels at U-14.
“This shows just how stupid this new rule is. It is incredible how it can split families like this.”
He said Peter loves Gaelic games and would be “gutted” if he wasn’t allowed to play for St Eunan’s.
“My family lives in Aughaninshin, yet under this new rule I would have to move to the Conwal and Leck part of the town in order for my children to qualify for St Eunan’s.
“This decision does not do anyone any favours. Under the agreement between the clubs 15 years ago, both clubs could take players from throughout the two parishes in the town. I can’t for the life of me understand why this has happened.
“We are a St Eunan’s family and we will be staying with St Eunan’s.
“I wish Letterkenny Gaels well in what they are doing to promote gaelic games in this county, but forcing this upon families like mine is eroding any goodwill that existed.”
