LOCAL authorities in Co Donegal lost an incredible €275,000 on car parking last year – despite fees and fines.
Donegal County Council ran up a shocking bill of €200,163 in 2011.
And Letterkenny Town Council – which is planning to prosecute dozens of people for non-payment of fines – lost a shocking €75,190 last year.
The charges are increasing pressure on businesses which are trying to make ends meet.
Chambers Ireland has called for a review of car parking charges – warning that new ways of doing things must be looked at.
“It is not helping to get shoppers into town centres,” said a spokesman.
“The whole issue needs to be looked at. Free car parking can really get people back into town centres. This has to be balanced against the need to ensure a supply of car parking spaces.”
