Donegal North East Fianna Fáil TD Charlie McConalogue has criticised Minister for Justice Alan Shatter for refusing to provide any clarity on the future of Newtowncunningham Garda station.
Deputy McConalogue said, “It is unacceptable that the Government is providing no information whatsoever about the garda numbers at Newtowncunningham Garda Station. The station is losing two gardaí and Minister Shatter is refusing to clarify if he plans to replace them.
“How can the Government claim that they are ‘maintaining frontline services at the highest level possible’, while garda staff at Newtowncunningham station have been halved?”
The local TD added: “Newtowncunningham and the surrounding areas particularly vulnerable in terms of threats from cross border crime. This region should be receiving extra resources not losing them. I will continue to press Government Ministers including Minister Shatter to clarify the impact of their decisions on local communities.”
