SOME Co Donegal GAA referees may go on strike over ‘crazy’ payments for officiating at games.
The Revenue Commissioners are insisting that new rules are implemented on payments – and Croke Park has agreed.
Referees in several other counties including Longford and Wexford have threatened strike action and one in this county told donegaldaily.com: “That might just happen here too. The new system is a disaster. The reimbursement proposals are paltry.”
In a document shown to donegaldaily.com on how the new Croke Park system, approved by the Revenue, will work says referees can claim 50 cent per mile plus a subsistence allowance of €13.71, up to a maximum of €40 (including mileage and subsistence).
It followed meetings between the GAA and the Revenue as a result of which referees expenses were subject to reductions throughout the country.
Meanwhile the Revenue has launched several investigations into payments going back several years. However Co Donegal does not feature in those.
