THE death has been announced of one of Donegal’s most celebrated musical stars – the songwriter Johnny McCauley.
The Fahan-born star wrote dozens of songs over the years.
He passed away in London last night aged 86.
Among those who sang his songs were Daniel O’Donnell who is said to be saddened by the death of Mr McCauley.
Daniel’s first ever studio recording – My Donegal Shore – was written by Johnny and it’s the name Daniel later gave his home.
Christy Moore also recorded Johnny’s song ‘Among The Wicklow Hills’ and he also wrote ‘Four Country Roads’, recorded by various artists over the years.
Local country music promoter and DJ Stephen Doherty told us: “It’s a sad day for country and Irish music fans in the North West. Johnny may be gone but his music will live on through the thousands of artists who still sing and record his music.”
