Donegal North East Sinn Féin TD, Pádraig Mac Lochlainn has welcomed the rejection of the fiscal treaty by the people of his constituency. As was the case in the two Lisbon treaty referendums, Donegal North East recorded the highest No vote in the state.
He described the result as “evidence once again that the people here demand a change of direction and an end to the failed austerity policies of this Government and the last”.
Deputy Mac Lochlainn said: “I am very proud that even in a real climate of fear created by the Government over future funding of this state, the people of Donegal North East have once again stood up to be counted. I am also mindful that large numbers of our people in Donegal and across the state voted Yes with a heavy heart. The government needs to understand that they have been given one more chance to do the right thing and defend Ireland’s interests in Europe. If they fail again, those who voted Yes with a heavy heart will not forgive them”.
“No county has suffered more from the failed policies of austerity than Donegal. Our people deserve to have hope. They deserve a real plan for jobs and growth. Our people are naturally a positive and dynamic people. However we are opposed to the direction that the European Union has taken and we have been proven right repeatedly over recent years. Lets hope this time, that our Government listens.
” In the time ahead, Sinn Féin will continue to hold this Government to account. They have once again given assurances to our people and we will fight to ensure that they honour those assurances this time”
