A newly restructured daily transport service connecting West Donegal to Letterkenny via Churchill has been launched by Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Alan Kelly TD.
This launch took place at Failte Ireland Tourist Centre, Letterkenny this morning.
Working closely with local communities and business, SITT have restructured an existing service that operates from Dungloe to Letterkenny daily. This new service is to commence on Monday 2nd July 2012.
SITT, set up in 2002 by South West Donegal Communities Partnership Ltd. is managed by a Board of Management from the voluntary and community sector, funded by the Dept. of Transport, Tourism and Sport, managed by the National Transport Authority (NTA) and is based in Killybegs.
The focus of rural transport is to address unmet transport needs of rural dwellers and provide an accessible affordable service based on that need.
SITT as part of its ongoing monitoring and reviewing of services, have restructured a daily service that runs from Dungloe to Letterkenny.
This service is now commencing at the Pier in Burtonport every morning to meet the ferries from Arranmor, stopping in Dungloe, Loughanure, Crolly, Dunlewy, Glenveagh, redirecting into Churchill, Sockar Road and on into Letterkenny.
This is an open transport service where passengers who own a Free Travel Pass may use it and for all other passengers there is a promotional fare of only €3 return for the summer months!
Careful thought and consultation has gone into the timetable so that third level students, trainees attending the various training centres and daily commuters arrive into Letterkenny before 9.00am and have a return service again in the evening.
This service is also ideal for people who have to attend hospital appointments or clinics in Letterkenny or Dungloe hospitals.
The bus will deliver you right to the hospital door. Once the bus has delivered all passengers into Letterkenny, it will commence a return service from Letterkenny to Burtonport.
This leg of the service is ideal public transport provision for visitors coming on main line transport services into Letterkenny and who wish to connect to West Donegal.
It is also an excellent service for people who wish to visit Arranmore Island, or the New Daniel O Donnell visitor centre in Dungloe, Glenveagh Castle and National Park, The Glebe Gallery, Gartan Outdoor Education Centre, Dunlewy – Ionad Cois Locha, Poison Glen, and Mount Errigal.
This service will enable connection to Bus Éireann and other services that travel to Dublin, Belfast, Derry, Sligo, Galway etc.
SITT are encouraging commuters to leave the car at home and hop on the bus so that an affordable sustainable service can continue after this pilot is completed in December of this year.
You can book your seat on the service, head off for the day and visit the wonders of West Donegal and return home again for a humble €3 return, or free if in possession of the Free Travel Pass. So as they say, the wheels of the bus are going round and round………………………….
