A LEADING Co Donegal businessman has issued a warning over fraudsters targeting local companies.
John Watson, from Watson Hire, has highlight a Garda warning about the scam which targets retailers.
Mr Watson, president of the Letterkenny Chamber, explained: “A caller phones the company saying they are the manager from their payment card services provider.
“He then instructs the person operating the card machine to put through a “test” transaction on their credit/debit card terminal. The transaction actually debits a large amount of money from the retailer’s banks account and credits it to a debit/credit card. He/she then instructs the retailer to throw away the transaction receipt.
“Authentic financial organisations should not make unsolicited calls to retailers or other businesses.
“The advice is not to follow any instructions. Take the callers full name and contact your Payment Card Service Provider (do not use the no. given by the caller) to check the information is authentic.
“If the call is not from your service provider call your local Garda Station,” he added.
