The child was killed in the accident involving a tractor near Glenvar, Kerrykeel.
The boy is believed to be from the Churchill area.
It is believed he was on his uncle’s farm when the accident happened.
Gardai and accident investigators are at the scene.
“The family are obviously devastated,” said one local man today, “exactly what happened is unclear at this stage.”
The boy was hugely popular in the area and his family is very well known.
The local man added: “The accident happened around lunchtime and ambulances were called but the wee boy didn’t survive.
“There is just widespread shock.
“People are just gutted that this has happened here.”
A Garda spokesman said the child was alive when he was pulled from under the vehicle.
“The boy was freed then removed to Letterkenny Hospital where he died a short while later,” said the spokesman.
The area has been sealed off and the Health and Safety Authority says it is investigating the incident.
