THE ROSBEG man who saved three children in a dramatic sea rescue yesterday was hailed a hero today by friends and relatives.
Paul Harkin, who now lives in the North, was home for a few days when he went to the rescue of the children.
Another man – Kieran Harkin – who isn’t related rescued a fourth child. Kieran was later taken to Letterkenny General Hospital.
Paul’s sister-in-law Susie told us: “Paul saved three of the children. Although he and Kieran have the same surname they are not related. The 4th child was saved by Keiran who is the child’s uncle. Only Keiran was airlifted to Letterkenny …. no children.
“Two female lifeguards came from Portnoo Strand and got into difficulties. They were rescued by local men in their rib.
“There are several local heroes, especially Paul, who are not being recognised.”
Local man Patsy Harkin (who isn’t related to the families involved) took his boat out and helped bring several people to shore including the lifeguards.
Added Susie: “At the end of the day, thank God everyone survived. Without these men it most certantly would have been a different story.”
