Donegal 3-12 Monaghan 0-13
Donegal NY’s claim on the NY GAA Intermediate crown was clearly staked Sunday with a 3-12 to 0-13 dismantling of Monaghan.
Pat McGill’s lads now take on Rangers for the silverware and promotion back to Senior ranks just two years after leaving the top table to focus on the middle ground on foot of seizing the Junior crown.
Giving up the opening two points to the Farneymen, Donegal quickly equalized and spurted ahead, never looking back or really being closely followed. A rocketed James Moynagh goal gave Donegal a lead that never narrowed and had them up by six at the interval.
The loss of Ardara’s Peter McNelis to a freak heel bang just before the half was ably filled from an ample bench and he got a welcome cheer from the squad on return from hospital for the after-match meal.
Fairly earning “Man of the Match” honor, Moynagh netted another goal in the second stanza and a successor by teammate Justin Burke put icing on the cake.
Two splendid saves by Goalkeeper Brian Cullinan, off a penalty awarded to Monaghan and then off a rebound, closed the door firmly on any hope for Tir Chonaill’s Ulster neighbors.
Donegal NY Cathaoirleach Laurence McGrath and all the “Hills” folk of the Big Apple are now in hope of a September “Double:” NY Intermediate on the 9th and the Sam on the 23rd.
