FATHER-OF-FOUR APPEARS IN COURT CHARGED WITH SERIOUS ASSAULT ON DOORMAN

A married father-of-four has appeared at Letterkenny District Court charged with a serious assault on a local doorman.New court

Ian Balfour, 36, was out on a stag party in Letterkenny at the weekend when the alleged incident happened.

Balfour, a part-time farmer, appeared in court wearing a suit and tie and with a blackened right eye.

He was charged with a Section 3 assault.

The court heard that Balfour, of Bellanaleck, Enniskillen, Co Fermanagh, was arrested at 2.55am on February 24th.

He was taken to Letterkenny Garda station and was charged at 2.54pm.

The arrest relates to an incident in which a doorman at the Central Bar on the town’s Main Street received a serious eye injury as a result of an alleged altercation.

A number of the alleged victim’s family and friends were in court for this morning’s hearing.

There was also a strong Garda presence at the brief hearing.

Gardai said they had no objection to bail and the accused was released with a number of conditions.

Solicitor Patsy Gallagher was told his client must sign on once a week at Ballyconnell Garda station and is also to produce bail of €1,000 and an independent surety of €2,000.

He was also ordered to stay away from any witnesses in the case.
