November 7, 2013

Gardai in Co Donegal want to use a computer seized from a pervert to train officers to spot other paedophiles.  computer

The computer was seized as part of an operation into child pornography.

The case has been dealt with but Gardai now want to use the contents of the computer.

An application was made at Letterkenny Circuit Court to have the computer handed over to Gardai.

State prosecutor Patricia McLaughlin said such computers are usually destroyed under the law.

However she stated “Usually the application is to destroy it but Gardai want to use it for the training of officers in this type of thing,” she said.

Judge John O’Hagan said he presumed it was the hard-drive of the computer which Gardai would be seeking to access.

However he added “I think it is not a bad idea but I have a feeling I may not have the power (to hand the computer over to Gardai),” he said.

He granted a destruction order on the computer but put a stay on it until further investigations are carried out.
