This video above captures the distressful final moments of a group of tragic Pilot Whales that became beached on Ballyness Bay, Falcarragh earlier this morning.
So far five whales have sadly perished on the beach at Ballyness Bay while eight others battle for life.
The other whales have been re-floated thanks to a mammoth rescue effort by locals.
However it appears that the whales are disorientated and seem intent on returning to land, which means they’ll almost certainly get beached again.
Rescuers described the sense of hopelessness felt earlier this morning when attempts to save five of the whales failed.
As seen in the video above, rescuers are helpless as the whales lie on the strand slowly dying gasping for a return to sea.
One rescuer said, It’s just heart breaking to be honest, it was hard to watch.
“We all felt hopeless as there was nothing we could do for some of them as they were close to death when they were found, but it was agonising watching them struggle.
“Thankfully we managed to re-float the majority of the whales, but it seems that there hesitant about going back out to sea, and seem to want to return to the land.
“They’re disorientated and some of them seem to be ill, if they do get beached again, I don’t think they will survive, but we’re just hoping they return to sea.
