Councillor Gerry Mc Monagle has launched a stinging attack on fellow councillor Frank McBrearty following yesterday’s controversial Joint-Policing Committee meeting.
Cllr McBrearty was expelled from the meeting after hot-tempered exchanges.
The Raphoe politician claimed he was expelled from the meeting after protesting at the presence of controversial councillor John O’Donnell.
Cllr O’Donnell is still denying any wrongdoing after being allegedly filmed by the RTE Investigates programme asking for cash in return for assistance with a fictitious wind farm application.
Cllr McBrearty has demanded that Cllr O’Donnell be expelled from the Independent Grouping on the county council.
However Cllr Mc Monagle, who is chairman of the Joint Policing Board, said the reason the Raphoe politician was asked to leave yesterday’s meeting was because he was “belligerent and disrespectful.”
Cllr Mc Monagle pointed out that Cllr McBrearty had already become hostile even before Cllr O’Donnell arrived at the meeting at the council offices in Lifford.
“I had barely sat my backside down when Cllr McBrearty began to become unreasonable. I tried to calm matters down as did several other councillors but Cllr McBrearty would simply not listen.
“We adjourned matters in a bid to bring some sort of civility to the meeting but Cllr McBrearty continued. The reason he was finally asked to leave the meeting was because he was belligerent and disrespectful,” he said.
Cllr Mc Monagle said he stood over his decision and said it was in line with protocol.
He added that he had not spoken to Cllr O’Donnell since the RTE Investigates programme and his party’s stance on the situation had been made very clear.
