FIANNA FÁIL will almost certainly have three seats in the Donegal five-seat constituency if TD Pat ‘The Cope’ Gallagher is elected Ceann Comhairle.
The move by Fianna Fáil was revealed by RTE last night.
Should the Dungloe politician get the role in the Dáil he would be automatically elected to the next Dáil – elections to which could be as soon a few months time.
That would leave the rest of the political parties fighting for just four seats – and we understand in that scenario Glenswilly councillor James Pat McDaid would be favourite to run on the Fianna Fáil ticket.
McDaid’s candidature has already been endorsed by the party hierarchy.
If Fianna Fáil command the same support at the next general election they are guaranteed two seats – leaving the other parties fighting it out for the other two.
