Donegal TD Joe McHugh and Cllr Terence Slowey have welcomed funding for a study identifying flood mitigation works in the west of the county.
It follows confirmation from Minister Kevin Boxer Moran that the Office of Public Works is to fund minor flood mitigation works and a flood defence scheme study from Portnoo to Dooey Point.
Minister Joe McHugh welcomed the funding which is to be given to Donegal County Council.
“This is an 18km stretch of coastline which has been prone to flooding in the past and funding of €76,500 has been approved to fund a study between Dooey Point and Portnoo,” said Minister McHugh.
“I want to thank my Government colleague Minister Moran for his decision on this case which is an important process for local people.”
Cllr Slowey said the move is significant for the area.
“Donegal County Council submitted an excellent case to the Office of Public Works for this study,” said Cllr Slowey.
“I am grateful to Minister Moran and his team at the Office of Publuc Works for giving this study the go-ahead.
“The study will be extensive and while it will follow the coastal route from Portnoo to Dooey Point, the council will also be able to identify other areas of concern.
“Flooding experts from the OPW will also be involved in monitoring the progress of the report which will feed into the Irish Coastal Protection Strategy Study which collates information on current risk and possible future risks right up to the end of this century.
“This study will be extremely helpful for current residents along this stretch of coastline but also for future generations, mapping the risks which lie ahead.”
