The cold snap is set to worsen tonight in the north west after Met Eireann have issued a snow and ice warnings for the region.
Donegal is in for a bitterly cold night (Thursday), with temperatures dropping below freezing. Donegal County Council have confirmed that gritters will be out on all regular routes from 4pm.
Heavy showers in the northwest may turn to sleet and snow on high ground as temperatures reach as low as -2 degrees celsius. Met Eireann warn that frost and ice are likely on untreated surfaces. Motorists are urged to be careful of black ice on the roads.
The Status Yellow Snow-ice warning is in place from Thursday afternoon to Saturday, while the low temperature warning is in effect until Friday morning at 11am.
Friday is expected to bring clearer conditions with showers. The chill will remain throughout the day, with highest temperatures of 3 to 6 degrees forecast.
