Exclusive: Escaped prisoner caught after being stopped at Garda checkpoint

March 10, 2018

A prisoner who escaped from Letterkenny Courthouse and went on the run has been caught, Donegal Daily can reveal.

William Reilly fled in handcuffs after he jumped over a barrier while appearing in court on January 29th last in broad daylight.

The 25-year-old from Letterkenny hid in garden sheds as Gardai launched a massive manhunt for him.

However, Reilly is back behind bars after being stopped at a routine Garda checkpoint in Castlefin last night.

The notorious criminal, who has 35 previous convictions, tried to flee from the car when stopped but was apprehended by Gardai.

He was taken to Letterkenny Garda Station where he was held overnight before appearing at a special sitting of Sligo District Court this evening.

Judge John Kilraine adjourned the case until Monday when Reilly will appear at Letterkenny District Court.

Father-of-two Reilly, who is already serving an 11 month sentence from the circuit court, faces charges of assault and criminal damage.
