Cllr John O’Donnell is calling on the Letterkenny Municipal to take preventive action before problems arise on the Blue Banks – Kilmacrennan Road.
Cllr O’Donnell says a hard shoulder is lacking on this busy route from Letterkenny to Kilmacrennan, which is currently undergoing major roadworks.
Speaking at yesterday’s Letterkenny MD meeting, Cllr O’Donnell said: “The new road is something that we have been calling for for years and we are all grateful for it. But when you leave Letterkenny and enter the Blue Banks, if somebody gets a puncture there is nowhere to pull in. If there’s a tractor travelling on the road you have to sit and wait until they pull in, and then they are blocking traffic on the N56.”
Cllr O’Donnell has asked to arrange a meeting with Fergal Doherty, Area Manager, Roads and Transportation and a member of the team currently on site.
Cllr Michael McBride said similar concerns were raised to him by members of the public, adding: “We are not trying to be negative, but constructive to say there should be a hard shoulder for free flow of traffic.”
Cllr O’Donnell requested that the Letterkenny Roads Department write to Transport Infrastructure Ireland on the issue.
However the executive said the current road type on the Blue Banks scheme, which is a Single Carriageway, is appropriate for improvement works to this section of the network.
Cllr O’Donnell asked for his concerns to be noted and taken seriously, as he predicted that problems will arise at a later stage.
