A man has died and a Garda from Donegal has been hospitalised following a serious incident in Co. Monaghan.
A man in his 40s died in the incident involving two cars in Castleblayney last night.
It is reported that the Garda involved in the crash was from Letterkenny. He had attempted to stop a vehicle outside Castleblayney Garda Station and was dragged 500m along the street.
The officer, aged in his late 20s, sustained facial, head and leg injuries and is being treated at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital Drogheda.
The crash occurred at around 11.30pm yesterday, when the driver of a silver Audi A6 left the garda station and drove down the Main Street before crashing into a Skoda Octavia.
The driver of the Skoda, a man in his 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene. A post-mortem examination is due to be carried out on his body at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.
The driver of the Audi A6 was arrested is being held at Carrickmacross Garda Station.
