Noel Cunningham almost clinches a seat in the Senate

 August 1, 2016

He’s known as the host with the most!

But flamboyant Noel Cunningham was almost a Senator according to documents just released form the department of the Taoiseach.

Noel, who is the host at Harvey’s Point, was among up to 70 names put forward to become one of 11 of Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s personal Senate nominees.

Noel even wrote to An Taoiseach explaining why he would be perfect for the job and would be working on a platform of tourism and the Wild Atlantic Way.

“I am a ferocious charity and community worker. This is a cheeky request, but never was such a move so appropriate and right,” said Noel.

Unfortunately Noel was not one of the 11 picked by Enda Kenny for the €65,000 post.

We can’t help thinking how good Noel would have been as another voice in the Senate for Donegal especially in the area of tourism.

Next time Noel!

Noel CunninghamNOEL Cunningham has announced he won’t run for the Dail at the next general election – but may consider running for President in four years’ time.

In a statement tonight the Harvey’s Point Hotel manager and TV3 celebrity expert said he had decided against running for Renua or as an independent.

But he might consider a run for the Aras.

“After a great deal of careful thought and discussion with family and friends I have decided not to put myself forward as a candidate in the next general election,” he said.

“I had initially decided against running but after presenting a well received paper on the challenges facing rural towns in Ireland at the recent Renua collaborative gathering. it was suggested I re-consider . That I did and realising that I could not give one hundred and fifty per cent to such a challenge I decided against running.”

He went on: My focus has and will always be my beloved Donegal … Community … My charitable endeavours as Patron of various causes .. Harvey’s Point and the promotion of all matters tourism . I have my heart and soul immersed in all things  Donegal. The many commitments to my own causes which include in the months ahead trips to London and New York  for Irish Community matters … Trips all over Ireland this winter for several charitable causes .. And a number of home based community issues requiring my in-put in my own Donegal ,which is above all else my main focus in life. These endeavours I engage in are done for neither financial gain or ego .

“And of course there is my main job. Harvey’s Point is for me the perfect fit for all matters relating to promoting Tourism and  the best Donegal has to offer. This Hotel is a huge part of my life . I am delighted to lead the  Team at this Hotel which is No 1 in Ireland and a huge local employer.”

Noel added: “I wish everyone putting their name forward the very best. As far as my own voting intentions .. The vote will go to the candidate who has Donegal and the many challenges we face in The Northwest as key to their campaign. In closing I say a huge thank you to all who so very kindly with sincerity and affection advised me and helped me arrive at my decision . The Aras …. Mmmmh that’s another story !!!!”

Noel and Majella at Harvey’s Point today

TV3’s Ireland AM was broadcast live from Harvey’s Point Hotel in sunny Donegal this morning.

Hotel host Noel Cunningham of course doubles up as the celebrity man on the show.

And he persuaded the TV3 team to come to the county for the day.

Majella O’Donnell, Jody Gallagher and Roly Daniels – and of course the Donegal Town Community Band – were all on hand to give Alan Hughes a warm welcome.

(And nobody will remember that rain shower! Sure the ducks loved it!)

TV3 star Noel Cunningham has revealed how the people of his native Co Donegal have been very supportive of his sexuality since he revealed he was gay.

The Kilcar man grew up in a very different Donegal in the 1960s and soon traveled to work in many places around the world including London and Asia.

However he was forced to return to Ireland following a horrific family tragedy which was to shape his life forever.

“In 1996, I came back to Ireland because my beloved sister Marie and her husband were killed in a car accident in Donegal. Their three small children were orphaned, and another of my sisters, Geraldine, was severely injured. Our family’s lives changed forever, and I came home to Donegal for good.

“I had a fear of not being accepted: being gay when I was growing up left awful insecurities . . . I know from the number of people who approach me for help that homophobia is still a huge problem: not a week goes by without me being contacted by young people who are having problems, or their parents, and it’s a source of pride to me that I can be of some help.

“Donegal – and my local community in particular – since I came home has been very warm and accepting.

Noel, who is also customer relations manager for Harvey’s Point Hotel, now lives in Killybegs.

He was speaking to the Irish Times for their magazine section about his friend and colleague Sinead Desmond.

Noel Cunningham has become a household name across Donegal and Ireland. The flamboyant TV3 showbiz reporter and host at Kitty Kelly’s restaurant is impossible to dislike. Here he tells us what he loves about Donegal.

What is your favourite place in Donegal and why?

Sliabh League … this stunning marine cliff is simply spectacular for climbing and spiritual as well.. It is all the more special in that in bygone days our relatives trudged up that Mountain .. doing a pilgrimage .. a turas .. whilst fasting. All those recited prayers on the Pilgrims Path adds to the unique spirit of the wonderful Mountain

If you could change one thing about Donegal what would it be?

I would re-introduce the railway !

Who is the one person in Donegal that you look up to and why?

Sr Magdalene for her wonderful work with those who have or are in recovery from cancer … and I am full of admiration for all she has done .. especially the Solas Cancer Centre in Donegal Town … what a woman !

Daniel O’Donnell or Packie Bonner?

What has been Donegal’s proudest moment in recent years?

Probably Anthony Molloy famously noting that Sam was for the Hills of Donegal!

What was Donegal’s saddest moment?

I think the multiple deaths as a result of the car crash a few years ago when one older Man and all those young people died in Inishowen …. utter devastation for so many and the residual anger guilt pain and suffering of all the Family and Friends left behind is almost too un-bearable to think of.

What is your favourite Donegal-made product?

Magee of Donegal and their wonderful Tweed

Who is Donegal’s greatest ambassador around the world and why?

There are a number of them … However I will choose Clannad .. They helped make Irish music sexy and universal. They set the bar very high and brought the haunting melodies inspired by the wilds of Donegal to a world audience .. and good news thay are off again touring !

Who is Donegal’s most successful businessperson in your opinion?

I believe Sir Gerry Robinson (he has close Donegal connections) deserves the nod !

Who is your favourite Donegal sportsperson of all time?

Gosh .. difficult one …I will look forward … I want to applaud Miss Easkey Britten in surfing and Chloe Magee for her Olympic participation .. both young women making a name for themselves.

What is your favourite Donegal restaurant?

Kitty Kellys …

Donegal’s golden eagles or basking sharks?

Golden Eagles

Your nomination for Donegal’s most stylish person?

Me Me Me …

What is your favourite Donegal saying or expression?

It’s a scitter of a day !

Will Donegal win the All Ireland this year?

They have an amazing chance !

What is your favourite Donegal food?

Freshly caught Mackeral … pan fried and served with new potatoes and a mild mustard sauce ..

Is there anything that really annoys you about Donegal or its people?

We don’t insist on letting the World know that we are only down the road now from Dublin!

If you had a million euro to spend on improving something in Donegal, what would it be?

Again .. the Railway … bring it back !

 January 8, 2012

HE should have won (in our opinion of course).

But TV3’s Noel Cunningham isn’t disappointed with coming second in this week’s Celebrity Come Dine With Me – beat by Roz Purcell.

Said Noel on Facebook: “I am astonished by the response to Celebrity Come Dine …literally thousands of hits over the past few days … The response of people to me personally and on .. Radio .. Newpapers .. has been huge and Twitter has been going mad … all pro Noel.

“How humbled I feel .. I want to say to all of you .. Thanks a million … It is quite lovely to become an overnight sensation after nearly 60 years ! Once again Thank you all … a million times over … Love Hugs and A Happy new Year to all … Maybe my own show beckons now .. hope so ! Noel.”

Later the Kilcar man laughed: “Roz won it but I’m not sure it was her cooking that got her the votes – more like her good looks and economic use of clothes! There is no doubt that both Paul Martin and George McMahon were both smitten by her. On reflection maybe I should have shown a bit of cleavage too!”

Well done to Noel from everyone at

We’re looking forward to your own show!
