WIFE OF DOUBLE-MURDERER GALLAGHER ACQUITTED

December 2, 2010

The wife of notorious Lifford double-killer John Gallagher has appeared in court on charges of welfare fraud.

Caroline Southern, 39, who lives with Gallagher in Strabane, appeared in Omagh Magistrates Court.

Southern met the Donegal man in England when he went on the run after failing to return to the Central Mental Hospital in Dublin.

The couple returned to Northern Ireland with their children where they settled just across the border in Tyrone.

Gardai still maintain that Gallagher, who murdered ex-girlfriend Anne Gillespie, 18, and her mum Annie, 51, in the grounds of Sligo Hospital in 1988, will be arrested if he steps foot across the border.

Caroline Southern faced three charges of welfare fraud but was acquitted.
