DESPITE SNOW falling in many of the county overnight, Met Eireann says the freezing weather will not last.

Motorists to be extra careful on rural and secondary roads with hail also falling in many places.

The latest snowfall was not expected to arrive until later today.

But with temperatures dropping to -8C in many places overnight, many places including Ballybofey, Ramelton, Fanad, Donegal Town and Letterkenny awoke to picture-postcard scenes once again.

But Met Eireann spokesman Vincent O’Shea said the snow will gradually leave Donegal this afternoon and move southwards.

It will remain cold with falls of sleet and hail in most places.

However the good news is the cold snap will not last much longer, with a warm Atlantic front set to bring storms but temperatures of up to 11c later in the weekend.

Gritters are out on red and green route roads again this morning in Donegal, but many roads are still treacherous.

There are reports of black ice on the Barnesmore Gap.

The County Council has joined Gardai is appealing for motorists to slow down.

The council says it has sufficient salt supplies to deal with the weekend road conditions after taking new supplies on Thursday.
