Deputy Joe McHugh was the unanimous candidate at the Fine Gael selection convention for the forthcoming General Election for Donegal North East last night after Colr. John Ryan withdrew.

Colr Ryan said that it was the view of the Inishowen grassroots that the party was now in such a healthy state that they should have two candidates.

It was unanimously decided at a meeting in Ballyliffin on last Tuesday night that they should select an Inishowen candidate and that is why he was nominated.

However, he said that bearing in mind  that the national executive of  FG had decided on a single candidate strategy he was now withdrawing his name and he wished Deputy Joe  McHugh every success and he pledged  his full support to him in the campaign.
The convention was chaired by Dr. James Reilly was a very upbeat affair with a large attendance.
