ONE of Donegal’s longest and most-publicised school extension debacles looks like it is finally to get a happy ending.
For almost 20 years, Glenswilly National School on the outskirts of Letterkenny, has been seeking an extension.
The matter dragged on so long that management at the school even officially renamed it as Glenswilly Looking for an Extension since 1992.
But it now appears that the school can now finally look forward to a brighter future.
The school has been included on a list of schools which will form a brief and then appoint a design team to draw the design for the school extension and refurbishment.
A source at the Department for Education described the move as a major step forward towards securing the funding and new build.
“Basically, the way was cleared for them to begin on the design for the project. Next, a plan is produced, planning is applied for, go to tender and build it.
“The best case scenario, you could be 18 months away for having it done,” said the source.
Like many other schools across the county, Glenswilly has been forced to use portacabins while there is no staff room available for teachers.
