UPDATED: A LOCAL buyer has been found for the fresh bread business at Gallaghers in Ardara potentially saving 50 jobs – but those facing the dole are insisting on union representation.
The confirmation of the jobs being saved came just hours after MEP Pat the Cope Gallagher had said he was confident of a sale.
Today the workers have formed the Gallaghers Bakery Workers Representative Committee and are being supported by SIPTU.
More than 100 of the employees have joined the group.
Meanwhile a bid by Dublin firm ‘Pat The Baker’ to buy the fresh bread business of Gallaghers in Ardara had been rejected.
The sale would have seen production moved and 50 more jobs lost at the Ardara facility where 124 jobs are already under threat.
Last night however MEP Pat The Cope Gallagher said he was confident a local buyer would be found and is close to completing a deal.
Mr Gallagher said he hoped details of the sale would be finalised over the next few days.
