UPDATED: RTE mentioned ‘possible sleet on the hills of Donegal’ and UTV didn’t mention it at all – but this morning the county is waking up to a widespread covering of snow.
Most of it is starting to melt already, but it is causing chaos on many roads, and there is flooding in many areas.
The BBC did mention snow in its late night forecast….long after most of us went to bed.
And schools have already been hit – as McGettigan buses and Home James withdrew services this morning.
The back road between Gaoth Dobhair and Termon via Mount Errigal is ‘passable with care’ whilst roads around Inishowen are said to be dreadful.
The roads around Letterkenny are poor and there is flooding on many roads around the town and on the Ramelton road. There are also floods at Burt.
Lorries broken down at Glencar in Letterkenny and at Drumkeen led to long traffic tailbacks. And there is chaos on the main road at Illistrin.
South of the gap, there is flooding on the N15 between Donegal Town and Ballyshannon.
Lurgybrack NS, Glenmaquinn NS and Fintown Vocational School are closed.
One reader emailed us from her car earlier to say: “It took me an hour to get from Letterkenny to Illistrin and I’m still stuck here. It is madness here this morning.”
