DERRYBEG MAN FOUND GUILTY IN HORRIFIC HURLEY ATTACK CASE

February 13, 2011

A Derrybeg man has been found guilty of producing a hurley and a bottle during an attack which left another man hospitalised.

CCTV footage showed Donal Ferry being savagely beaten on the head with a hurley stick outside Sgt Pepper’s Takeaway on May 9th, 2009.

Daniel Duffy, 21, of Lower Coteen, Derrybeg was found guilty of producing a bottle and a hurley but found not guilty of assaulting Mr.Ferry by a jury  at Letterkenny Circuit Court.

He will be sentenced at a later date.

A woman who was along with Duffy on the night, Aine Doohan, now 19, has already pleaded guilty to assaulting Mr Ferry on the night.

CCTV footage shown in court delivered graphic footage of Doohan of Meenamillar, Derrybeg, producing a hurley stick and then striking Mr Ferry on the side of the head with the pointed part of the hurley.

Mr Ferry said he remembered nothing about the incident but waking up in hospital later.

Judge John O’Hagan was told that despite CCTV footage showing a lot of people outside the takeaway, none were willing to come forward to give evidence to Gardai.

Both Doohan and Duufy, who were dating at the time of the attack, will appear at a future court sitting for sentencing.
