A 55 year old West Donegal man is to face trial on 84 sex charges against young boys.

The man, who cannot be named, is accused of the rape and the sexual assault of four boys aged between 12 and 14 between 1999 and 2004.

Garda James Canning told Glenties District Court that he served the book of evidence in the case on the defendant yesterday morning in Glenties.

Inspector Sylvie Henry said the Director of Public Prosecutions had consented to all charges being sent to the Central Criminal Court.

The man is also charged with illegally having a revolver on July 29th last year.

Defence solicitor Patsy Gallagher applied for bail in the case but it was objected to by the Gardai.

Judge Seamus Hughes said he was refusing bail because of the seriousness and the number of alleged offences.

He said he would be recommending an early trial and ordered the accused be remanded on bail at Castlerea Prison to appear at the current sitting of the Central Criminal Court.
