Two of Ireland’s top boxing coaches were in Letterkenny last night to deliver a master class in the fundamental techniques of boxing to a large group of boxing coaches.

Zaur Antia, who is technical and tactical coach with the Irish Amateur Boxing Association, and Billy Walsh who is High Performance Coach and no stranger to boxing circles, enthralled their audience with a high activity and very practical demonstration of coaching the fundamental techniques of boxing.

Ably supported by local lad and international boxer Jason Quigley a member of the Finn Valley Boxing Club the two hour session focused on the fundamentals of coaching in developing the boxers of the future.

Jason was fresh from his narrow defeat in the senior championships in Dublin’s National Stadium where he was just beaten by Darren O’Neill.

Billy Walsh said he was delighted to have the opportunity for Zaur and himself to come to the North West to meet the club coaches and to share his experiences with them.

He said that coaching the fundamentals was the building blocks of boxing and so important to the development of young boxers.

He also praised the local clubs for the work that is done at grassroots level in promoting and developing the sport.

The event which was organised through the North West Coaching and Club Development Network and Donegal Sports Partnership attracted coaches from most of the sixteen registered clubs in the county and was held in the Letterkenny ABC, headquarters on the High Road.
