INTERPRETER SOUGHT FOR IRISH-SPEAKING MILFORD DEFENDANT

March 4, 2011

DISTRICT court judge Seamus Hughes has set March 28th as the date to mention a case of a 70-year-old Milford man who insisted on speaking Irish at a recent sitting of Letterkenny District Court.

Before the court was John Riney of Market Square, Milford, who faced two counts of assault and one count of breaching the peace.

Mr Riney, who represented himself in the case, would only address the court in Irish.

Judge Hughes said he was not proficient enough in Irish – particularly the Donegal dialect – and asked Mr Riney of he would speak in English. Mr Riney continued to speak in Irish.

The judge adjourned the case until March 28th and asked for an intepreter to be present.
