What  a  pleasant change in the weather a really beautiful sun filled day and no wind to provide protection to the course .Every advantage was taken  as the scoring was really exceptional both Gross and in the nett. After the horrendous weather of the winter it was such a pleasure to play such a good course rated 51 in the Ireland Golf Digest top 100 courses .it is good to see that they are not resting on their laurels and several bunkers have been introduced during the winter.

In the Gross section the exceptional scoring was led by l Damien Mooney. He led the onslaught with a drive to the heart of the first green and holed a 7 foot putt for eagle. He promptly bogied the par 5 second having had a three putt. He then parred all the rest of the holes on the front nine except the par 3 7th which he birdied. He was out in 33 which is 2 under. A clear leader you might think well no he was not .Michael McGeady just back from Spain had birdied 4 and 5 both par fours and also the 9th par 4 to be out in 32. Toiling along behind was Garrett Mallon in 35 and on 36 were Noel Callan ,Enda Kennedy and young Finian O’Doherty.

Damien and Michael birdied 10, Michael dropped a shot at 11 and Damien went into over drive with 3 birdies in the next 4 holes while Michael had one birdie .This proved to be the end of the contest between them as the both parred the last two holes and so Damien won by one shot. This was not the end of the great scoring though as local professional Connor Mallon came home in a best back nine score of 33.

In the nett section the scoring was equally good as four players who had tasted victory already this year battled it out. Ricky Boal was really shooting out the lights with a nett 31 for the first nine. His pursuers Kieran Martin with a 35, Eddie McHugh and last week’s winner Stephen Harris both on 36 were not ready to concede at this early stage .They all tried valiantly but could not make up the deficit entirely although at the end Ricky’s margin of victory was down to 2 strokes from Eddie with Kieran 3rd three strokes back and Stephen 4 back.

The placing’s in the golfer of the year categories were all sorted out as well. Kieran Doherty who had been leading on 30 points did not add to his total nor did the runner up Enda Kennedy but none of their immediate pursuers did either .In the GROSS Justin MacLochlainn who had won it with one competition to go duly strode home and in a keen contest to be runner up Michael McGeady just got home from Noel Callan the Alliance vice –captain.

So having endured one of the worst seasons for frost and snow and cancellations the alliance is coming to a close for this season having only missed one competition in all. This all leads up to the grand finale of Padraig MacLochlainn‘s Captains Day at North West Golf Club on 19th March 2011

Final Competition Captains day on 19th March North West  G.C.
