A number of local politicians are set to contest the Seanad elections.
Initially it was thought only councillor Jimmy Harte was to seek a nomination from the Labour Party.
But it’s now understood that a number of other councillors are also to seek similar nominations.
Inishowen councillor John Ryan of Fine Gael was not successful in the general election but impressed many to be nominated by his party.
It is also believed veteran councillor Bernard McGuinness could be chosen by Fine Gael leader and Taoiseach Enda Kenny for his work on behalf of the party during the election.
Others to seek a Seanad nomination include Fine Gael county councillor Martin Harley and Fianna Fail by-election loser Barry O’Neill.
Former Lord Mayor Brendan Byrne has also revealed he has been approached by senior aprty figures to stand for the Seanad and is on talks about whether to stand.
Those who will not be seeking a Seanad nomination include Cecelia Keaveney and outgoing TD and Tanaiste Mary Coughlan.
