TAOISEACH Enda Kenny has ordered civil servants to continue a case in the courts against Donegal South West TD Pearse Doherty – even though Doherty won….TWICE!
Last year the Sinn Fein man successfully argued in the courts for a by-election in the constituency.
He won that election – and has since been re-elected to the same seat in the General Election.
But bizarrely the new Government under Enda Kenny are going ahead with an appeal against Doherty’s autumn court victory.
Reacting to the decision, Doherty told donegaldaily.com that the move was ‘an incredible waste of time and money’ and an affront to democracy.
Deputy Doherty challenged the Taoiseach in the Dáil yesterday to drop the appeal.
And speaking after the Taoiseach refused his request Deputy Doherty said: “Given that two Fine Gael members took similar actions in other constituencies on the back of the success of my case I would have assumed that a Fine Gael led Government would have dropped the appeal against my case.
“Enda Kenny’s refusal to drop this case is a waste of time and money and an affront to democracy.
“This is an appeal to a case about a by-election that has already taken place to a Dáil that no longer exists. It is incredible that Enda Kenny would continue to pour public money into this case.”
