GARDAI ISSUE ‘PIER’ WARNING AFTER MEN CHEAT DEATH IN ACCIDENT

GARDAI are warning motorists not to park on slipways or piers after two men cheated death in an incident in Buncrana last weekend.

Two men from Muff had a lucky escape when their car slid on algae at the pier, sending them and their vehicle crashing into Lough Swilly.

They were later rescued by an RNLI lifeboat and were in “a very distressed state.”

They only survived, say experts, because the windows of their cars were down and they were able to swim to safety once the vehicle was submerged.

John O’Raw of the Inishowen Sub Aqua Club, who helped to recover the vehicle, said: “Had the windows been up, we may have been talking about a very different outcome.”
