LETTERKENNY CHILDREN’S ORCHESTRA & FRIENDS
Love:live Music Ireland’s National Music Day

By Víctor Yélamo

To celebrate Love: Live Music – National Music Day Ireland next Friday, April 8th, the
Letterkenny Children’s Orchestra and the Regional Cultural Centre
present a Classical Music Recital with music by Bach and Gluck and
other compositions performed by the junior ensemble and friends.

Founded in 2009, the Children’s Orchestra is an initiative of the
Szabó-Yélamo String Duo. The Children’s Orchestra aims to complement
the weekly individual instrumental lessons and to motivate beginners
to work as a team, and also to develop social skills. The ensemble
comprises string players aged 7 to 13, students of Orsolya
Szabó-Yélamo, Lucia Spacirova, Brian Bergin and Víctor Yélamo – who
also conducts the ensemble.

The Children’s Orchestra trains and prepares string players for the
Donegal Youth Orchestra; some of its members have already joined the
larger ensemble. They made their performance debut in February 2010 as
part of the Szabó-Yélamo Concert Series at RCC, with great feedback
from music teachers and the general public. They got national
invitations to participate in the Junior Orchestra Festival of the
Coole School of Music (Gort, Galway).

The group would like to thank Anne McHugh (principal) and all the
caretakers of Errigal College for allowing the Children’s Orchestra to
use their premises for our Monday rehearsals.

Letterkenny Children’s Orchestra and Friends is a great opportunity to
celebrate the future of Classical Music in Donegal. At the same time
we celebrate the children of today who will entertain and delight
coming generations; we also celebrate the National Music Day of
Ireland through this free event, starting at 5.30pm at the Gallery of
the Regional Cultural Centre.
