EGGS-CLUSIVE! St. Johnston schoolboy Kyle Bell doesn’t care if he doesn’t get any Easter Eggs this year.
That’s because the aspiring chicken breeder has come across the most unusual egg which could be worth more than all the chocolate eggs in the world.
The 15 year old from Drumatoland has been keeping chickens for the past six months.
But nothing prepared him for the shock he encountered when he was going about his morning ritual collecting eggs before going to school.
As he was picking up the usual half dozen eggs he usually gathers from his 13 hens and two roosters, Kyle noticed a very unusual egg – shaped like a finger!
“At first I thought it had broken but then I realised it was a full egg and it was the most unusual shape.
“I rushed into the house to show my family and they thought it was bizarre as well.
“I then checked on the internet and the only one I can see like it is one that was laid by a hen in China so it must be very unusual,” he said.
Kyle’s grandfather Roy, 70, who has kept chickens all his life says he has never come across anything like it before.
Since finding the egg-straordinary shell, Kyle has tried to preserve it by putting clear nail varnish on it.
And he still doesn’t know which of the 13 Isaac and Rhode Island Red hens he keeps actually laid the egg.
“It has cracked a little but it still looks great. I’m not letting it out of my sight. I have a feeling which one of them it was but I can’t be certain.
“I have rushed down to the hen-house every morning since the egg was laid but there has been nothing like it since. I’m beginning to think it was just a once-off,” he laughed.
Kyle lives just a mile from where a three-legged calf was born recently on the farm of Kenneth Vance in Momeen.
“I haven’t seen it yet but sure we have all sorts of wonderful creatures around here,” said Kyle.
Kyle, who is a third year student at Raphoe Royal and Prior, says he is still not sure about what he wants to do when he leaves school.
“I suppose I could try and be a farmer but there’s not great money in it any the moment.
“Somebody said to me that my egg might be worth a lot of money. If I could find out which of my hens laid the rare egg then maybe I could go into business making them,” he laughed.
