BALLYSHANNON VOWS TO GET TOUGH ON YOUNG LITTER LOUTS

DONEGAL County Council’s litter warden is to meet with members of Ballyshannon Town Council to draw up a strategy to combat littering in the town.

The warden is to meet with officials in the coming days as serious concern is expressed by councillors about the state of certain parts of the town.

As well as illegal dumping and dog fouling problems, councillors have said there is a huge problem with teenagers dumping empty beer bottles all over the town.

Independent Cllr Pat O’Malley revealed that during a recent clean-up, he and another colleague picked up no less than 40 empty quart bottles of spirits as well as various other beer cans and bottles in the Knather area.

He said more needs to be done to make a link with the young people of the town to show them they have a responsibility to make Ballyshannon look cleaner.

He suggested the litter warden could look at possibly school projects in a bid to catching the younger people at an early age in order to educate them.
