The Convoy-based businessman addressed a meeting of the Irish Road Haulage Association at the weekend where he won overwhelming support for the action.
He claimed Transport Minister Leo Varadkar, told the hauliers he wouldn’t be able to meet them until May.
Mr McLaughlin told donegaldaily.com last night: “The support is now there for a nationwide campaign and a letter has been sent to the Government warning them that they have a week to respond.
“If they don’t respond we will meet this weekend to discuss setting up a protest across the country.”
He said fuel costs have risen since his campaign began two months ago – and 60 hauliers have gone bust since the start of the year.
Deputy Joe McHugh has offered to meet him to discuss his concerns.
