RESIDENTS and firefighters are praying for rain this afternoon – as more gorse fires hit the county.
Forecasters say rain will hit the county later this evening, helping to quench fires which have been raging since last weekend.
In the past few hours fires have started again near Portnoo, Glenties, Ardara and Falcarragh.
Hundreds of local people have taken to the countryside to help fight the flames with smaller gorse fires reported in several other areas.
Acting chief fire officer Bobby McMenamin says an assessment of all fires is ongoing.
A short time ago an eye-witness in the glen at Glenties told donegaldaily.com: “We are all praying for rain now. I’ve spoken to a friend in Mayo and it’s raining there already so the sooner it gets here the better.”
There has been widespread praise of local young people who have come out in communities across the county to help 200 firefighters and troops.
A short time ago local people in Portnoo appealed for help in tackling a blaze there.
